How to add a simple product

When it comes to adding or editing a product for your online store there are options galore, but let's go over the basics:
  1. In the main menu go to Products and then All Products and select an existing product you want to edit or Add New to add a new product.
  2. At the top you will see the product name/title. You can edit this to be whatever you want.
  3. In the Product short description box towards the bottom of the page you can enter in a description for your product.
  4. Above this you will see the Product data box. In this box is where all your product parameters live. Let's go through these different tabs. In the General tab is where you can set the products price or on sale price and whether the product is taxable. On the Inventory tab you can enter in an SKU (stock keeping unit) or product code if necessary, whether you want to manage stock and also how much of the product is in stock. In the Shipping tab (used for non virtual products), you can enter in the weight and dimensions of the product; this data is used by shipping services like Australia Post to calculate the shipping cost, so it's important you enter in this information. In the Advanced tab you can elect whether you want to enable reviews or not for the product and you can also add a product note, this can be handy if your product requires additional instructions.
  5. On the right hand side you will see the Product image box. Here you can upload a product image by clicking the Set product image link or if you are editing an existing image, just click on the existing image and you will be able to select/upload a new one. Depending on how your shop has been setup you may also see a Product gallery box, here you can upload multiple images which will show underneath the main product image - this can be handy for showing different angles of your product.
  6. Above this box on the right hand side you will see the Product categories and Product tags boxes. You can optionally assign your product to a range of categories or tags and this can help you keep your products organised and help customers on the frontend find products easier. This can also be used if you have specific rules in place, like perhaps product which belong to X category get a discount, or products that below to Y category cost an extra $10 to ship.
  7. Once you are done press the Update/Publish button.
You can also change the URL of the product by clicking on the blue link underneath the product name at the top of the page.
You will also see a review box towards the bottom where you can add reviews/comments or manage existing reviews for the product.
